RON PERLMAN (Actor, USA)

Guest presence: friday 7.2. a saturday 8.2.

Ron Perlman is an actor with an astounding resumé, which boasts a vast array of roles in theatre, film, and TV productions. Ronald N. Perlman was born on the 13th April 1950 in the Washington Heights neighbourhood of Manhattan, in New York City.

Perlman has always had a huge fanbase. One of his first roles was that of the strong Amoukar, one of the tribe members in the Oscar-winning Jean-Jacques Annaud film, QUEST FOR FIRE (1981). Perlman's performance won him a Genie Award nomination. Perlman also worked with Annaud on the film THE NAME OF THE ROSE, where he assumed the role of the hunchback, Salvatore (1986). His major breakthrough came later, however, when he played the role of the Beast in the fantasy TV show, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1987), alongside Linda Hamilton. This role brought him both a Golden Globe award and a new underground fanbase. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled after the third season, just after the death of Linda Hamilton’s character.

Ron continuously spent time working for TV productions and independent films. For example, he starred as Angel de la Guardia in Guillermo del Toro’s film debut, CRONOS (1993) (it was here that their close friendship and professional relationship began). Ron also assumed the lead role for the first time, as One in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s surrealist film, THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN (1995). His first major role in a mainstream Hollywood movie came when Jeunet cast Perlman as the brutal Johner in the film ALIEN: RESURRECTION (1997). Perlman has also used his distinctive voice to great effect, doing voice-overs in a vast array of animated films, TV shows, and advertisements. He is also a popular figure among gamers due to his work for the video game series, Fallout.

It did not take Perlman long to receive worldwide critical acclaim for his acting abilities, especially after his friend, Guillermo del Toro, cast him as the lead actor in the big-budget comic book-inspired film, HELLBOY (2004). Del Toro battled with the studio for nearly four years to land Perlman this role, as they preferred a supposedly greater name. In the end, the director got his way. As a result, after nearly 25 years of starring in more or less obscure roles, Perlman became a well-known, bankable actor. Perlman’s acting portfolio is vast: he has played every sort of role, from prehistoric apes to ageing transsexuals. As a result, he will always be considered a rarity in Hollywood.

His other major roles include the cunning Norman Arbuthnot in the film THE LAST SUPPER (1995), the assassin Koulikov in the film ENEMY AT THE GATES (2001), Reinhardt the vampire leader in BLADE II (2002), a return as Hellboy in the film HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY (2008), and the leader of a biker gang in the popular TV show, SONS OF ANARCHY (2008).
